About
Aspen Flats Cabin is a primitive Forest Service cabin nestled along the Upper Russian River in Alaska's Chugach National Forest, situated between Lower and Upper Russian Lakes on the 21-mile Russian Lakes Trail. The surrounding terrain features flat to hilly landscape with scattered spruce and cottonwood forests and abundant mountain views. Wildlife is plentiful, including moose, black bears, brown bears, and wolves. The 12x14-foot cabin provides bunk space for six guests with a maximum occupancy of eight. Amenities include a wood stove for heating, counter space, table and benches, splitting maul, hand saw, and an outhouse. There is no electricity, potable water, mattresses, bedding, cooking utensils, or cut firewood provided. Guests must pack in all supplies including water or be prepared to treat water from natural sources. Fishing opportunities abound in the adjacent Russian River for Dolly Varden and rainbow trout, with sockeye and coho salmon running from June through September (note: fishing for salmon upstream of Russian River Falls is prohibited). The Russian Lakes Trail offers excellent hiking and mountain biking through muskeg, meadows, and high-canopied forest. Winter access requires avalanche awareness and preparation for over-ice travel conditions.
Directions
Access via Russian Lakes Trail: 9 miles from the trailhead in Russian River Campground or 12 miles from the Russian Lakes Trailhead on Snug Harbor Road. Follow the 0.3-mile cabin access spur trail off the main trail. Winter distances increase to 10 and 15 miles respectively. Parking available at Snug Harbor Road trailhead. Refer to USGS topographic maps Seward B8 and Kenai B1.
