About

Barber Cabin offers a remote backcountry lodging experience on the Eastern Kenai Peninsula. The 16x20-foot log cabin sits on the east shore of Lower Russian Lake, surrounded by scattered spruce forest and meadows with scenic mountain views. It accommodates up to 6 people and includes a wood stove for heat, table with benches, splitting maul, crosscut saw, outhouse, and a rowboat with oars for lake access. Access is via the Russian Lakes Trail, a 3.4-mile hike from the trailhead at Russian River Campground off Sterling Highway mile 52.6. Alternative access includes mountain biking, horseback (closed April 1 - June 30), skiing, or floatplane (25 minutes from Seward or Cooper Landing). Motorized access is prohibited year-round. Winter travelers should be prepared to evaluate avalanche conditions and over-ice travel. Lower Russian Lake offers rainbow trout fishing and seasonal sockeye and coho salmon runs. The 21-mile Russian Lakes Trail connects to Upper Russian Lake Cabin and passes through muskeg, meadows, and high-canopied forest. The area has a high concentration of black and brown bears, moose, and wolves. No potable water, electricity, mattresses, bedding, cooking utensils, or cut firewood are provided.
