About
Located at Milepost 50.7 on the Sterling Highway, Cooper Creek South Campground provides a wooded camping experience with sweeping mountain views in Alaska's Chugach National Forest. The campground sits at 400 feet elevation among spruce and cottonwood forest, positioned along both Cooper Creek and the Kenai River. The area is renowned for its sockeye (red) salmon fishing, with excellent boat and bank fishing opportunities on the Kenai and Russian Rivers. Hikers and mountain bikers can access the nearby Resurrection Pass Trail, a 38-mile scenic route that climbs from 500 to 2,600 feet. Bear activity is common in this area. Bears have damaged tents and soft-sided trailers in past years, and emergency orders may prohibit tent camping. All attractants including food, garbage, and hygiene items must be stored in a hard-sided vehicle or the provided bear-proof storage lockers.
Directions
From Anchorage, go south on Seward Highway to Sterling Highway. Turn towards Soldotna at the Y junction. Cooper Creek Campground is at Milepost 50.7 of the Sterling Highway, on the opposite side of the river.
