This closure was enacted due to illegal off-highway vehicle use, resource damage to sensitive riparian areas, and ongoing restoration efforts. These activities have caused soil erosion, vegetation loss, and habitat disturbance, which require time and space for recovery.

Snow Play Closure
Snow play areas within the Smokey Bear Ranger district near Ski Apache are closed until further notice to protect the public from the potential danger in proximity to the state highway 532.

About
Upper Fir Group Area is one of the most popular group campsites in the Sacramento Mountain region of Lincoln National Forest. Set at 9,000 feet elevation and tucked far back from public roads, it offers exceptional peace and quiet for large gatherings. The site accommodates up to 120 people and features a covered pavilion, 12 picnic tables, two fire rings, drinking water, vault toilets, and trash service. The campground is surrounded by a mixture of pine, fir, aspen, and oak trees, with high mountain meadows full of wildflowers. An adjacent open meadow provides space for group activities. The nearby Rim Trail offers epic views of the Tularosa Basin and provides hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding opportunities with rocky inclines and switchbacks. Located just a mile from the quaint tourist village of Cloudcroft, the campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the 1.1 million-acre Lincoln National Forest. Day trips to White Sands National Park, featuring the world's largest gypsum dune field, are accessible to the west. RVs are limited to 30 feet due to site constraints.
Directions
From Alamogordo, take US 82 east 17 miles through Cloudcroft. Turn left onto NM 244 towards Ruidoso and go about 0.5 miles. Turn right to enter Upper and Lower Fir Campgrounds area. Upper Fir Group Area is at the end of Forest Road 422.
