This closure was enacted due to illegal off-highway vehicle use, resource damage to sensitive riparian areas, and ongoing restoration efforts. These activities have caused soil erosion, vegetation loss, and habitat disturbance, which require time and space for recovery.

Snow Play Closure

Snow play areas within the Smokey Bear Ranger district near Ski Apache are closed until further notice to protect the public from the potential danger in proximity to the state highway 532.

About

Apache Campground sits at 8,900 feet elevation in a scenic mixed conifer and aspen forest within Lincoln National Forest near Cloudcroft, New Mexico. The campground offers 24 non-electric sites that can accommodate tents or RVs up to 30 feet in length, providing a refreshing mountain retreat from the summer heat of the desert floor below. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. The campground provides vault toilets and a central garbage depository for visitor convenience. Interpretive trails wind through the forest, offering opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the area. The campground is part of the Silver-Saddle-Apache Campground Complex, accessed via paved roads off NM-244. Apache Campground is located in the birthplace region of Smokey Bear and offers a rustic camping experience in one of southern New Mexico's most beautiful high-elevation forests. Reservations are available through Recreation.gov during the operating season.

Travel east on US82 from Cloudcroft, turn left onto NM244. In approximately 4 miles, turn right at the Silver-Saddle-Apache Campground Complex sign onto Forest Road 24C.
