This closure was enacted due to illegal off-highway vehicle use, resource damage to sensitive riparian areas, and ongoing restoration efforts. These activities have caused soil erosion, vegetation loss, and habitat disturbance, which require time and space for recovery.

Snow Play Closure
Snow play areas within the Smokey Bear Ranger district near Ski Apache are closed until further notice to protect the public from the potential danger in proximity to the state highway 532.

About
Lower Fir Group Area is a high-energy group campground nestled in the Sacramento Mountains within Lincoln National Forest at 9,000 feet elevation. The site accommodates up to 70 people and is set away from public roads, providing a peaceful setting with only the sounds of rustling aspen leaves and local wildlife. Surrounded by lush mountain meadows and forests of pine, fir, aspen, and oak trees, the campground offers dramatic views of the Tularosa Basin. The facility includes a covered pavilion, 8 picnic tables, 2 fire rings, bathrooms, and potable water. An adjacent open meadow is ideal for group activities like volleyball or horseshoes. The campground is connected to Upper Fir Group Area for even larger gatherings. The Rim Trail is nearby, offering spectacular views and challenging terrain for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. The campground is located just a mile from Cloudcroft, a quaint mountain village with New Mexico's only standing railroad trestle. The area provides excellent opportunities to observe elk, deer, birds, and occasional black bears. White Sands National Park lies to the west for a dramatic day trip to the world's largest gypsum dune field.
Directions
From Alamogordo take US 82 east for 17 miles, just past Cloudcroft. Turn left onto NM 244. Go approximately 1 mile. Turn right onto Forest Road 422. Go approximately 1/4 mile. Campground is on the left.
