About
Union Grove State Park sits in northwest Tama County and was established in 1938 with 110-acre Union Grove Lake as its focal point. The park provides a scenic contrast to surrounding agricultural areas with an attractive waterfall and dam nestled in the woods. The modern campground is 100% reservable and offers seven full hookup sites and two buddy sites, along with modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station during the camping season. The lake supports excellent fishing opportunities for bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, saugeye, walleye and northern pike. Two boat ramps provide access, though the lake operates at no-wake speeds. An unsupervised swimming beach offers recreation for all ages. After-hours fishing is permitted from designated bank areas between 10:30 p.m. and 4 a.m. Three miles of scenic trails traverse diverse habitats including a re-established prairie and pine plantation in the northeast corner. Deer and turkey are commonly seen, along with numerous songbirds and waterfowl. Trails accommodate hiking in warmer months and snowmobiling in winter. The park also features two modern ADA-accessible year-round cabins, shaded picnic areas, and a reservable open shelter.
