About
Rock Creek State Park is one of central Iowa's most popular camping destinations, located in Jasper County near Kellogg. The park centers around the 602-acre Rock Creek Lake, Iowa's third-largest man-made lake, which provides 15 miles of scenic shoreline. The campground features nearly 200 campsites, with approximately 101 offering electrical hookups. Many sites are positioned directly on the water's edge or nestled in wooded areas, providing beautiful lake views. Modern restroom and shower buildings serve the campground, and a dump station is available for RVs. Recreational opportunities abound year-round. The lake offers excellent fishing for crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish, with bow fishing popular for the lake's carp population. Anglers can fish from the shoreline, an artificial jetty, or an accessible fishing pier near the south boat ramp. Ice fishing is available in winter. Boating is permitted at 5 mph maximum speed, with multiple boat ramps around the lake. The park's marina offers seasonal boat rentals including pontoons, fishing boats, canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats. The park features more than 8 miles of non-paved, multi-use trails that wind around the lake, suitable for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and in winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. A separate 5-mile paved bike trail on the park's east side connects to the town of Grinnell. Additional amenities include a swimming beach, picnic shelters, a playground, and a concession stand operating from mid-April through mid-October offering camping supplies, bait, tackle, firewood, and convenience items.
