About
North Tailwater Picnic Shelter is a day-use facility situated on the north bank of the Des Moines River, just below Red Rock Dam. This is not a campground and overnight camping is explicitly prohibited. The shelter is available for day-use activities until dusk.
The shelter provides 20 amp electrical service, picnic tables, an outdoor grill, and access to nearby flush toilets. The area offers scenic river views and access to boating, fishing, hiking, and biking. Wildlife viewing is popular here, with waterfowl including American White Pelicans migrating through in spring and fall, and bald eagles observable from November through March.
The site is located approximately 10 minutes from Pella, known for its Dutch heritage, and 15 minutes from Knoxville. The 15-mile paved Volksweg Trail is accessible from the area.
