About
North Overlook Campground occupies a scenic, hardwood-forested shoreline on Lake Red Rock, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Des Moines River and Iowa's largest lake. The campground offers 52 sites total: 46 shaded sites with 50-amp electric hookups and 6 primitive tent-only sites. Each electric site accommodates one wheeled unit and two tents, or three tents, with a maximum of 8 people per site. Amenities include flush toilets, hot showers, potable water, and a dump station. A playground keeps younger campers entertained, and North Overlook Beach lies within a quarter mile for swimming. The area is popular for boating, water skiing, and fishing for crappie, largemouth and striped bass, walleye, catfish, and bluegill. Wildlife viewing is excellent, with migrating American White Pelicans in spring and fall, bald eagles from November through March, and resident white-tailed deer and turkeys. The 15-mile paved Volksweg Trail begins in nearby Pella (known for its Dutch heritage) and extends to the Cordova Recreation Area. Knoxville, the sprint car capital of the world, is 15 minutes away.
