About
Tower Rock Campground occupies a significant place in American history as a campsite used by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in August 1805. William Clark described the striking rock formation above the campground as a "Clift of dark brown flint," now known as Tower Rock. This Precambrian quartzite represents some of the oldest rock in Idaho. Located 10 miles north of Salmon along Highway 93, the campground provides direct access to the Salmon River, making it a prime destination for steelhead and trout anglers, rafters, and river floaters.
The campground offers 6 campsites including 4 standard sites suitable for RVs and tents, plus 2 designated tent-only sites. All sites are equipped with accessible picnic tables and fire rings with grills. Facilities include accessible vault toilets, fishing platforms, a picnic shelter, and a boat ramp for launching onto the Salmon River. The campground has no hookups but provides paved campsites and accessible paths throughout. Extra vehicle parking is available.
Beyond camping and river recreation, the surrounding area offers diverse opportunities including motorized and non-motorized trails, hunting, wildlife viewing, and photography. The nearby Tower Pyramids Day Use Area features unique "hoodoo" sandstone formations near another Corps of Discovery campsite. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis in winter, with seasonal reservations available June 21 through December 31 via Recreation.gov Scan & Pay App.
