About
Hogan Cabin is a historic one-room log cabin built in the 1920s to provide field quarters for trail crews, smoke chasers, timber cruisers, and grazing inspectors working in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Situated on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail at approximately 7,300 feet elevation in the southwestern end of the Anaconda Mountains near the Sapphire Range, the cabin offers a remote backcountry experience in western Montana. The cabin sleeps up to four people on bunk beds with mattresses and is equipped with a table, chairs, propane stove, propane lantern, wood stove for heat, and basic cooking and cleaning equipment. An outhouse with vault toilet and campfire ring with grill are located nearby. The cabin now features solar lighting, though the system may not function during extended cloudy periods. Firewood and an axe are provided from October 1 through June 15; guests must bring their own firewood from June 16 through September 30. There is no electricity, running water, or cell phone service. Guests must bring their own water, bedding, food, propane canisters, and other necessities, and pack out all trash. Access varies by season. During summer months until snow closes Forest Road 106, the cabin is accessible by motorized vehicle. From December 2 through May 15, the cabin must be accessed by snowmobile, skis, snowshoes, or other over-snow travel methods, covering up to 6 miles depending on route and conditions. Multiple access routes are available, including the Broadway Trail from Chief Joseph Pass, the challenging Shoofly Trail, and Trail Creek Road. The surrounding area offers excellent opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, hiking, backpacking, fishing in mountain streams, hunting, and wildlife viewing, including elk, deer, moose, bears, and mountain lions.
Directions
Travel west on Highway 43 from Wisdom, Montana for approximately 20 miles. Turn north on Trail Creek Road #106 and travel approximately 6 miles. The cabin will be on the left (west) side of the road. Winter access requires snowmobile, skis, or snowshoes via multiple routes: Broadway Trail from Chief Joseph Pass (6 miles), Shoofly Trail #3117 from Highway 43 Cabinet Creek parking area (shortest but most difficult), or Trail Creek Road #106 (flattest, shared with snowmobiles).
