About
Hogan Cabin is a small log cabin located along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail at approximately 7,300 feet elevation in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Built in the 1920s as field quarters for trail crews, smoke chasers, timber cruisers, and grazing inspectors, the cabin now serves as a year-round rental for recreationists. The one-room cabin accommodates up to four guests on bunk beds with mattresses. Amenities include a wood stove for heat, a propane cooking stove and lantern (propane canisters not provided), table and chairs, cooking and eating utensils, and a solar lighting system. A vault toilet outhouse is located nearby. Firewood is provided from October 1 through June 15 only. No potable water, garbage service, or cell coverage is available; guests must bring water and pack out all waste. The surrounding Anaconda Mountains offer hiking, backpacking, hunting, and fishing in summer and fall, with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling in winter. Wildlife including elk, deer, moose, mountain lions, and bears inhabit the area. The cabin is accessible by vehicle via Trail Creek Road #106 during summer months; from December 2 through approximately mid-May, access requires snowmobile, ski, or snowshoe travel of up to 6 miles depending on snow conditions.
