Mount Rynda Cabin outhouse
Open

Open year-round with reservations available through Recreation.gov. The Stikine River is typically ice-free May through October. Low river levels can limit small boat access as the Andrews Creek entrance may become blocked. A tide of 14 feet or higher is needed for shallow draft boats to cross the tide flats.

About

Mount Rynda Cabin sits on moderately steep riverbank at the base of Mount Rynda, overlooking the confluence of Andrews Creek and Andrews Slough. Built in 1963, this 16x16-foot A-frame cabin features a sleeping loft, partially covered front porch with built-in bench, and a bear-proof food storage locker. The interior includes two single bunks (one with trundle bed), a wooden table with benches, and an oil space heater requiring #1 stove oil, which guests must provide. Two miles of slow-moving, clear water near the cabin provide ideal opportunities for canoeing or kayaking up Andrews Creek at river stages over 14 feet. The cabin is frequently used as a layover by paddlers on multi-day float trips of the Stikine River from Telegraph Creek, BC to Wrangell. Andrews Creek offers excellent fishing for cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, and king, pink, and silver salmon, while the area is also popular for bear and moose hunting. The surrounding forest is primarily Sitka spruce and western hemlock. Brown and black bears, moose, harbor seals, gulls, and bald eagles are frequently seen around the cabin. The Stikine River serves as a travel corridor for migratory birds between interior forests and the coast. Wilderness restrictions apply, including prohibition of helicopter access.

Directions

Access by shallow draft boat or float plane from Wrangell, 18 miles up the Stikine River. The cabin is located south of the main channel of the Stikine River at the confluence of Andrews Creek and Andrews Slough. A tide of 14 feet or higher is required to cross the Stikine River tide flats. Check local conditions by calling +1 (907) 874-2323.
