About
Shakes Slough 2 Cabin offers a genuine wilderness experience in one of Alaska's most spectacular river corridors. Situated on the north shore of the Stikine River within the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness, this A-frame cabin provides views of Popof Glacier, Mount Basargin, and surrounding peaks. The cabin sits tucked into a stand of Sitka spruce, with ferns and salmonberry in front and willow and alder along the slough. The 16x16 cabin accommodates up to seven people with two single bunks (one with a trundle bed) and a sleeping loft. Amenities include a table with benches, an oil space heater requiring #1 stove oil (not provided), and an outhouse. A bear-proof locker on the partially covered front porch provides secure food storage. No potable water or electricity is available. Recreation opportunities abound. Shakes Lake and Glacier lie three miles north, offering excellent wildlife viewing and scenery. Chief Shakes Hot Springs is four miles upstream via Hot Springs Slough. Cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden fishing is available June through October. Brown bears, black bears, moose, and mountain goats inhabit the area, and the Stikine River tide flats serve as a major stopover for migratory shorebirds.
Directions
From Wrangell, the cabin is 20 miles by floatplane or 25 miles by shallow-draft boat up the Stikine River. Located on the north shore at the Shakes Slough entrance in the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness. A minimum tide depth of 14 feet is required to navigate the Stikine River tide flats.
