About

Turney Gulch Group is a scenic group campground nestled in the ponderosa pine forest of Prescott National Forest, approximately seven miles southeast of the former ghost town of Crown King, Arizona. At 6,000 feet elevation in the Bradshaw Mountains, the site offers relief from desert heat with pleasant summer temperatures, though afternoon thunderstorms are possible from late June through mid-September. The campground accommodates groups of up to 100 people with a maximum of 30 vehicles. Facilities include a historic wooden ramada/pavilion, picnic tables, fire grills, an accessible vault toilet, and bear-proof trash receptacles. Potable water is available at the water hydrant outside Horsethief Cabin, roughly one mile away. The nearby Horsethief Lake offers fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish, and sunfish, as well as boating with electric motors or oars. Access requires travel on unimproved dirt roads; high-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended. Cell coverage is poor to non-existent. The surrounding forest supports deer, mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, and various bird species including bald eagles. The Castle Creek Wilderness provides hiking opportunities nearby.

Directions

From Prescott, the recommended route is via Mayer, especially in winter. Take Main Street through Mayer continuing east to the junction with Antelope Creek Road. Continue southeast for approximately 9 miles to Cordes, then take Forest Road 259 to Crown King. From Crown King, take FR 259A south for 0.5 miles to the junction with FR 52, then FR 52 southeast for about 6 miles to the campground, located approximately one mile past Horsethief Lake. The road is unimproved dirt requiring high-clearance vehicles.
