About
Trail River Cabin sits on the shores of Kenai Lake surrounded by hemlock, cottonwood, Sitka spruce, and aspen in Alaska's Chugach National Forest. This family-friendly two-story log cabin accommodates up to 8 people with bunk space for 7, and is equipped with a wood stove, splitting maul, hand saw, counter space, table, and benches. An outside picnic table and fire ring are provided. The cabin features a wheelchair-accessible ramp at the entrance. The location offers direct beach access to Kenai Lake, where Dolly Varden, rainbow trout, and lake trout can be caught year-round with special restrictions near inlet streams. Within a mile radius are five trails including Falls Creek Trail, Crown Point Mine Road, Ptarmigan Creek Trail, and Vagt Lake Trail, all connecting to the Iditarod National Historic Trail. Brown and black bears frequent the area, so proper food storage is essential. Visitors must bring their own sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cook stove, cooking gear, and food. No electricity, mattresses, bedding, cooking utensils, or cut firewood are provided. Potable water is available from the campground during summer but must be hauled in during off-season. The nearest vault toilet is 400 feet away in the campground loop.
Directions
From Anchorage, go south on Seward Highway approximately 100 miles to Crown Point. Turn at Milepost 24.2 onto Trail River Road for 2 miles to the campground. Turn right to Eagle Point Loop; the cabin is located next to site 90. Use designated cabin parking only. In winter, park outside the campground gate and ski approximately 1.2 miles to the cabin. Do not drive on groomed cross-country ski trails.
