About
Porcupine Island Camp sits on Kenai Lake's remote eastern shore within the Chugach National Forest, providing one of the Kenai Peninsula's few boat-accessible backcountry camping experiences. The site is approximately seven miles by water from Quartz Creek Campground, where the nearest boat launch is located. Travel time is roughly two hours depending on conditions. The surrounding landscape features dramatic mountain views including Mount Adair and the peaks stretching from Cooper Lake to Primrose. Kenai Lake itself offers exceptional fishing for rainbow trout, lake trout, and Dolly Varden. However, campers should be prepared for the lake's cold temperatures and rapidly changing weather, as conditions can deteriorate from calm to rough with little warning. As a primitive boat-in site, Porcupine Island Camp requires full self-sufficiency. Campers must bring all water, supplies, and be prepared to pack out all trash. This is true backcountry camping suited for experienced paddlers and boaters seeking solitude away from roadside campgrounds.
Directions
From Anchorage, drive south on the Seward Highway approximately 100 miles to Cooper Landing. Turn onto Quartz Creek Road and continue to Quartz Creek Campground, where the boat launch provides access to Kenai Lake. Porcupine Island Camp is approximately 7 miles by water from the boat launch, roughly a 2-hour boat trip depending on conditions.
