About
Trail River Campground occupies a prime location on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula, nestled between the Trail River and the pristine waters of Kenai Lake at 450 feet elevation. The Chugach National Forest surroundings provide stunning scenery with jagged mountains, glacier-fed waters, and dense coastal forests of hemlock and spruce. Three campground loops offer different experiences: Spruce Tree Loop provides ample shade with stellar mountain views, Eagle Point Loop overlooks Kenai Lake, and River Terrace Loop sits closest to the river. Fishing opportunities abound, with Dolly Varden, rainbow trout, and lake trout available in Kenai Lake year-round (special restrictions apply within 1/4 mile of inlet streams; salmon fishing is prohibited). Five hiking and biking trails begin within a mile of the campground, including Falls Creek Trail, Ptarmigan Creek Trail, Crown Point Mine Road, and connections to the Iditarod National Historic Trail. The Falls Creek OHV Trail and Crown Point Mine Road provide motorized recreation options with above-treeline views. The campground includes a group site accommodating 70 guests with a timber frame pavilion, central grill, volleyball court, horseshoe pit, and playground. Day use access to Kenai Lake beach is available for swimming, fishing, and rock skipping. In winter, the entrance road and loops are groomed for Nordic and freestyle skiing.
