About
Lower Paradise Lake Cabin offers an exceptionally remote backcountry experience in the Chugach National Forest. Situated at about 1,340 feet elevation on the north shore of Lower Paradise Lake, the cabin is surrounded by alpine mountains with glacier views visible from the front door. The landscape features alder, willow, and spruce forest with abundant wildflowers in spring and wild berries in late summer. The 12x14-foot log cabin sleeps six on bunks (max occupancy eight) and comes equipped with a wood stove for heat, table, benches, counter space, splitting maul, and crosscut saw. A rowboat with oars is provided for fishing grayling in the lake. An outhouse is located nearby. Visitors must bring all water (or treat lake water), food, bedding, sleeping pads, cooking gear, and firewood, as wood is not plentiful locally. All garbage must be packed out. Access is by floatplane only from Moose Pass (15 min) or Seward (20 min). Alternative foot access involves a challenging 8-mile bushwhack from Ptarmigan Lake Trail or 14 miles via North Fork Snow River Valley. The area supports hunting in season, with moose, black and brown bears, sheep, and mountain goats present. Inclement weather can cause delays, so bringing 2-5 extra days of supplies is recommended.
Directions
Access is by floatplane only. The flight is approximately 15 minutes from Moose Pass or 20 minutes from Seward. There is no trail to the cabin and foot access is not recommended. Alternative hiking routes exist but are extremely challenging: an 8-mile bushwhack from the east end of Ptarmigan Lake Trail, or 14 miles via North Fork Snow River Valley.
