About
Ptarmigan Creek is a small, peaceful campground nestled beside its namesake creek in the Chugach National Forest on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. Situated at 470 feet elevation in a wooded area of spruce and paper birch, the campground offers incredible views of the surrounding Chugach Mountains. The 16 non-electric sites wrap around the banks of Ptarmigan Creek, just a short walk from Kenai Lake. The area is a prime destination for anglers pursuing Dolly Varden and rainbow trout. From late August to early September, campers can view red salmon spawning in the creek from a dedicated fish viewing platform. Wildlife is abundant throughout the forest, with moose, brown and black bears, mountain goats, and Dall sheep frequently spotted in the surrounding terrain. The Ptarmigan Lake Trail departs from the campground area, leading hikers along the shore of the turquoise Ptarmigan Lake and climbing through meadows, brush, and forest. The campground also provides access to the historic National Historic Iditarod Trail. Miles of hiking and biking trails weave throughout the region, making this an excellent base camp for exploring the Kenai Peninsula backcountry.
Directions
From Anchorage, drive south on the Seward Highway approximately 100 miles to Crown Point. The campground is located at Milepost 23.1, just south of Moose Pass.
