About

Dale Clemens Cabin is a rustic Forest Service cabin situated at approximately 1,750 feet elevation in the Chugach National Forest on the Kenai Peninsula. The 14x18-foot cabin sits just above tree line, surrounded by mountain meadows, groves of hemlock and spruce trees, and abundant wildflowers. The cabin offers spectacular views of Resurrection Peak, Mt. Ascension, Resurrection Bay, and the town of Seward in the distance. The two-story cabin sleeps up to 4 people and includes a loft, table, oil stove heater, and an outhouse. Visitors must bring their own heating fuel: one gallon of kerosene or number one heating oil per night during summer months (June-August) and two gallons per night for the rest of the year. The cabin does not provide mattresses, bedding, cooking utensils, running water, or electricity. Recreational opportunities include fishing for rainbow trout in nearby Lost Lake, hunting for moose, black and brown bears, wolves, mountain goats, and ptarmigan (in season), and year-round hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Winter snow can linger into July, and the area is susceptible to heavy fog and rain in summer and whiteout conditions in winter. The trail is typically not open to foot travel until mid-June. Trails are closed to motorized vehicles May 1 through November 30 and closed to pack/saddle stock April 1 through June 30.

Directions

From milepost 5 on Seward Highway, turn onto Scott Way and follow signs to the Lost Lake Trailhead. In summer, hike 4.5 miles to the cabin. In winter, ski or snowmobile 2.5 miles to the cabin. Alternative access: from milepost 17 on Seward Highway at Primrose Campground and Trailhead, hike 12.6 miles on a steep and rugged trail. Access through Lost Lake Subdivision is on privately owned land; be courteous of landowners' rights.
