About
Dale Clemens Cabin is a remote backcountry cabin in the Kenai Peninsula portion of Chugach National Forest, perched just above tree line at approximately 1,750 feet elevation. The cabin offers stunning views of Resurrection Bay, Seward, and surrounding peaks including Resurrection Peak and Mt. Ascension. Mountain meadows, hemlock and spruce groves, and abundant wildflowers surround the site. The 14x18-foot cabin features wooden bunks and a loft sleeping up to 8, a table with benches, counterspace, and a Nordic oil drip stove for heat. Visitors must bring kerosene or #1 heating oil (1 gallon per summer night, 2 gallons per night other seasons). An outhouse is located outside. No potable water, electricity, mattresses, bedding, or cooking utensils are provided. Access is via the Lost Lake Trail from Mile 5 on Seward Highway (4.5 miles in summer, 2.5 miles in winter) or the more challenging Primrose Trail from Mile 17 (12.6 miles on steep, rugged terrain). The trail is closed to motorized vehicles May 1 through November 30 and to pack stock April 1 through June 30. Winter travelers should evaluate avalanche conditions carefully.
Directions
From Mile 5 on Seward Highway, turn onto Scott Way and follow signs to Lost Lake Trailhead. Summer access is a 4.5-mile hike; winter access is 2.5 miles by ski or snowmobile. Alternatively, from Mile 17 on Seward Highway at Primrose Campground, hike 12.6 miles on the steep Primrose Trail. Trail is closed to motorized vehicles May 1 through November 30.
