About
Crescent Lake Cabin is a 12x14-foot rustic cabin situated at the northwest end of scenic Crescent Lake in the Kenai Mountains of Chugach National Forest. At an elevation of approximately 1,450 feet and close to tree line, the cabin offers views of surrounding mountains and access to excellent outdoor recreation opportunities year-round. The cabin sleeps 6 people and includes basic amenities: a table, wood stove for heat, splitting maul, crosscut saw, outhouse, and a rowboat with oars for exploring the lake. Visitors must bring their own bedding, mattresses, cooking utensils, food, life jackets, and firewood. Crescent Lake is popular for grayling fishing (season opens July 1), and the area offers hunting opportunities for moose, black and brown bears, and Dall sheep in season. Hiking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing are popular activities. Access is via the 6.5-mile Crescent Creek Trail from the trailhead off Quartz Creek Road, or by floatplane (15-20 minute flight from Moose Pass or Cooper Landing). Winter access is recommended via Carter Lake Trail and crossing frozen Crescent Lake due to extreme avalanche danger on Crescent Creek Trail. The trail is closed to motorized vehicles May 1 through November 30 and closed to horses April 1 through June 30. High winds can create dangerous conditions on the lake. Visitors should bring extra supplies for unexpected weather delays and be prepared to boil water from surface sources.
Directions
From milepost 45 on Sterling Highway, take Quartz Creek Road 3.2 miles to the Crescent Creek trailhead. The cabin is 6.5 miles down Crescent Creek Trail. Winter access recommended via Carter Lake Trail and crossing frozen Crescent Lake. Also accessible by floatplane (15-20 minute flight from Moose Pass or Cooper Landing).
