A period of strong wind gusts is expected on today as the remnants of Hurricane Isaias move into eastern Kentucky. Southeasterly winds of 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph are expected. Isolated gusts up to around 40 mph are possible in exposed areas near Lake Cumberland. The strongest winds are expected from late morning through the afternoon and should coincide with the arrival of the leading bands of rain. Once rainfall becomes steady, winds will lighten. The gusty winds could blow around unsecured outdoor objects and decor.

* WHAT...Southeast winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 35 to 50 mph expected over higher terrain above 1,500 feet and in the valleys immediately northwest of the Pine, Black, Cumberland, and Log Mountains. Communities at greatest risk for the strongest wind gusts include Cumberland, Eolia, Chenoa, Frakes, and Mayking. Locations further removed from these taller prominent mountains should expect southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph with occasional gusts of 20 to 35 mph. * WHERE...Bell, Harlan, and Letcher Counties. * WHEN...From noon today to 5 AM EDT Sunday. * IMPACTS...Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs and weakly rooted trees in steep terrain could be blown down and a few power outages may result. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Communities at greatest risk for the strongest wind gusts include Cumberland, Eolia, Chenoa, Frakes, and Mayking.
