About
Buckhorn Campground on Buckhorn Lake provides an outdoor escape in eastern Kentucky's lush Cumberland Plateau. Located near the dam on the 1,230-acre Buckhorn Lake, the campground sits within the scenic Appalachian Mountain Range, where rugged plateau landscape is deeply traversed by narrow, winding valleys and branching streams fed by the Kentucky River. The campground offers diverse camping options including standard electric sites, tent-only walk-in sites, and boat-in camping. Facilities include flush toilets, hot showers, electric hookups, a dump station, laundry facilities, and free WiFi. On-shore entertainment includes a basketball court, playground, and horseshoe pits, while water recreation is accessible through a swimming area and boat ramp. A nature trail and fishing areas provide additional outdoor activities. The campground hosts monthly interpretive programs during summer months. Buckhorn Campground was recently recognized as the location for the largest River Birch Tree in the country by The National Register of Big Trees, measuring 205 inches around, 117 feet high with an 85-foot crown. Nearby attractions include Carr Creek Lake, Buckhorn Log Church, Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park, Red River Gorge Geological Area, and the Daniel Boone National Forest. The lake welcomes fishing, boating, water skiing, swimming, and hunting.
