Tompkins Bend

About

Tompkins Bend Recreation Area sits on a wooded peninsula extending into Lake Ouachita, surrounded by the Ouachita Mountains and National Forest. The campground's 77 sites are spread across four loops (A, B, C, D), with most sites large enough to accommodate two camping units. Site types include Standard Electric sites with 50/30/20 amp service and water hookups, as well as a limited number of tent-only nonelectric sites. Maximum RV and trailer lengths vary by site, with some accommodating rigs up to 70 feet. The crystal-clear waters of Lake Ouachita span over 40,000 acres and extend 30 miles, offering excellent opportunities for water skiing, jet skiing, and fishing. The campground also provides direct access to the Lake Ouachita Vista Trail (LOViT), a hiking trail that meanders across the south end of the lake. Wildlife in the surrounding mountains includes bobcats, black bears, deer, and bald eagles in winter. Nearby attractions include Hot Springs National Park (known as "The American Spa") and the 1.8 million-acre Ouachita National Forest, which features the Wolf Pen Gap Off-Highway Vehicle Trail System for off-roading enthusiasts.

Directions

From Hot Springs, Arkansas, take US 270 west approximately 24.5 miles to Tompkins Bend Road. Turn right and follow the access road 2.4 miles north to the park. From Mount Ida, Arkansas, take US 270 east about 10.7 miles to Tompkins Bend Road. Turn left and follow the access road 2.4 miles north to the park.
