About

Charlton Recreation Area is a historic campground built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935, nestled in a valley between two tree-covered mountains along Walnut Creek in the heart of Ouachita National Forest. Located 17-20 miles west of Hot Springs National Park along Highway 270, the campground features 47 campsites across three distinct loops. A-Loop offers 18 basic campsites without electric or water hookups, though community water spigots are available throughout the loop. B-Loop provides developed RV/tent sites with 30-50 amp electrical service and water connections. C-Loop is divided into two sections: campsites 1-10 offer 30-amp electrical service, water connections, and some sites include sewer hookups, while campsites 11-19 in "Booger Hollow" are basic sites with community water access. Two group sites accommodate larger parties. Modern amenities include warm water showers, flush toilets, paved roadways, gravel tent pads, and a dump station. The day use area features a captivating native stone dam that creates a swimming area fed by cold, spring-fed Walnut Creek, maintaining refreshing temperatures even during hot summer months. A large pavilion, amphitheater, and picnic facilities are available. The area offers a 1-mile interpretive Prayer in the Woods Trail and a connector trail to the 40-mile Lake Ouachita Vista Trail. Walnut Creek provides opportunities for wading, fishing, and crawfishing. Dogs must remain leashed in the campground and are prohibited in the day use and swimming areas.
