The combination of dry surface conditions, low afternoon relative humidity values, and gusty east to southeast winds will result in elevated fire danger conditions across northern lower Michigan the remainder of this afternoon. Sustained winds of 7 to 15 mph with gusts of 20 to 30 mph will be seen over northern Michigan this afternoon. Minimum relative humidity values of 20 to 35 percent are expected over much of northern lower Michigan. These conditions could lead to rapid spread of fires. About
Tippy Dam Rustic Cabin provides a backcountry lodging experience within the Tippy Dam Recreation Area, positioned on the dammed portion of the Manistee River known as Tippy Dam backwaters. The cabin sleeps up to six with bunk bed configurations, solar-powered lighting that operates in favorable weather, a propane heating stove for warmth, and basic furniture including a table and chairs. An outdoor fire circle allows for campfires. The cabin has no running water or electricity; a hand pump provides drinking water nearby, and a vault toilet serves the area. The location is renowned for world-class fishing, particularly during fall Chinook salmon runs when anglers line the banks below the dam. Spring brings steelhead and sturgeon opportunities. The recreation area features two boat launches, an accessible fishing pier on the Manistee River, paddling access, and trails for hiking. Winter activities include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the surrounding trails. Reservations are made through MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. Check-in is at 4 p.m. and check-out is at noon. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Guests should bring certified heat-treated firewood to prevent spread of invasive species.
