About

Blacksmith Bayou Access is a rustic riverside campground and day-use area located along the Manistee National Recreation River in the Huron-Manistee National Forest. The site sits beside an oxbow lake, created when the Manistee River changed course over geologic time, leaving behind this scenic bayou in the mile-wide river valley. The campground offers primitive camping with approximately 3 campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit. The North Country National Scenic Trail passes through the area, crossing the entrance road and following the ridge along the bayou, providing access to excellent hiking and backpacking opportunities. The bayou is popular for fishing year-round and becomes a favored spot for ice fishing during winter months. Facilities include vault toilets and parking for up to 24 vehicles. No potable water is available on-site, so visitors must bring their own or treat water from nearby sources. Day-use fees apply, and the site operates seasonally from April through November, with winter closures due to snow and road conditions.

Directions

From Manistee, travel east on M-55 for 15 miles. Turn left and travel north on High Bridge Road for 2 miles. Turn left and travel west on Chicago Avenue for 1 mile. Turn right and travel north for 0.5 miles to the site entrance.
