About

Tiadaghton State Forest encompasses 146,539 acres primarily in Lycoming County, with portions extending into Tioga, Potter, Clinton, and Union Counties. Named for a Native American term describing Pine Creek, the forest is part of Pennsylvania's Wilds region and features narrow plateaus cut by steep valleys carved by fast-moving mountain streams. The forest offers 87 designated campsites across four types: roadside sites with vehicle access, roadside hike-in sites with short walks from parking, state forest rustic campgrounds like Black Walnut Bottom and Tomb Flats with concentrated sites and vault toilets, and trailside sites accessible by bike, boat, or foot. All sites are primitive with no electric hookups, dump stations, or trash service. Most sites accommodate up to 10 people with varying driveway lengths from 14 to 55 feet. Recreation opportunities include the Pine Creek Rail Trail running parallel to several camping areas, the challenging 42-mile Black Forest Trail loop, the Mid State Trail, canoe and kayak access on Pine Creek, and excellent fishing in mountain streams. Vault toilets are available at Black Walnut Bottom and Tomb Flats campgrounds. The Tiadaghton Resource Management Center offers maps and interactive exhibits about forest management.
