About
Thumb Cove State Marine Park encompasses 720 acres on the east side of Resurrection Bay, approximately 9 miles south of Seward. The park is a favorite destination for kayakers and recreational boaters seeking a peaceful anchorage protected from Resurrection Bay's afternoon winds and waves. The dramatic setting includes towering Porcupine Glacier, spectacular rock faces, cascading waterfalls, and forested uplands of spruce, hemlock, and alder. The park features two public-use cabins available for rent: Porcupine Glacier Cabin and Spruce Glacier Cabin. Each cabin accommodates up to 8 people and includes two sets of full-size bunk beds (no mattresses), a table, benches, counter, and wood stove for heating. The Spruce Glacier cabin is wheelchair accessible with assisted access from the water landing. Both cabins have pit toilets nearby. Backcountry camping is permitted along the beach. With no road access, visitors must arrive by private boat, commercial water taxi from Seward, or floatplane. The waters of Resurrection Bay can be choppy and hazardous to small watercraft, particularly in the afternoons, requiring caution and appropriate boating experience. Fresh water is available from a stream flowing from Porcupine Glacier but should be purified before drinking. Fishing for salmon during seasonal runs is popular in the protected cove.
