About
Exit Glacier Campground is a 12-site walk-in tent-only campground situated in the Exit Glacier area of Kenai Fjords National Park, the only part of the park accessible by road. Located approximately 8 miles from the Seward Highway on Herman Leirer Road (Exit Glacier Road), the campground provides a primitive camping experience with no fees and no reservations. Sites are available first-come, first-served, with a 14-day stay limit and accommodate up to two tents and eight people per site. The campground features a central food storage, cooking, and dining shelter where all food preparation and storage must occur. Cooking or storing food at individual campsites is strictly prohibited due to bear activity in the area. A seasonal water pump provides drinking water, and vault toilets are available year-round. Two sites (#1 and #12) are accessible with wide, level access paths. Fires are limited to steel fire rings at the campground cooking shelter. The road to Exit Glacier closes to vehicle traffic when snow arrives, typically from October through mid-May, though the area remains open for winter recreation. During summer months, the campground frequently fills by early evening in July and August. Pets are not permitted in the campsites, and RVs are not allowed.
Directions
From Seward, turn onto Herman Leirer Road (Exit Glacier Road) at mile 3 of the Seward Highway (AK-9). Proceed 8 miles. The campground is the first turn on the left after crossing into the park, approximately 3/4 mile after the park entrance sign and just before the Exit Glacier Nature Center parking lot.
