About
The Blind River Rapids Shelter is a rustic 8x12-foot three-sided Adirondack-style shelter in the Petersburg Ranger District of Tongass National Forest. Reached via the Blind River Rapids Trail, a flat 0.25-mile accessible boardwalk, the shelter features interior benches and offers views of Blind Slough and the surrounding old-growth rainforest. This is a primitive backcountry shelter with no amenities at the shelter itself. A vault toilet is available at the trailhead parking area, but there is no potable water anywhere on site. Visitors must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash. The shelter is available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis for both day use and overnight stays, with no reservations required or accepted. The trailhead is located 14 miles south of Petersburg on the Mitkof Highway (Mitkof Island) and includes a large parking area. The area sees light use and provides opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography in Southeast Alaska's temperate rainforest environment.
Directions
From Petersburg, drive 14 miles south on the Mitkof Highway. The Blind River Rapids Trailhead is on the right with a large parking area. Follow the 0.25-mile boardwalk trail to the shelter.
