About

Twin Creek Shelter is a primitive three-sided Adirondack-style shelter nestled in the forest and muskeg of Tongass National Forest on Mitkof Island near Petersburg, Alaska. The shelter provides basic protection from the elements and includes a wood stove for heating and benches for seating. A small parking area is available nearby. The shelter serves as the starting point for several winter recreation trails including the Twin Ridge Ski Trail, Upper Twin Ski Trail, and Twin-Frenchy Snowmobile Trail. Water can be sourced from nearby muskeg pools or streams but must be treated before consumption. There are no restrooms or other developed facilities at this location. This is a backcountry shelter intended for self-sufficient visitors who are prepared for primitive conditions. Use is free and operates on a first-come-first-served basis year-round. The light usage level means the shelter is typically available, though winter recreationists should be prepared with backup camping gear.

Directions

Drive south on the Mitkof Highway approximately 6.2 miles and turn left on the Twin Creeks Road (unmarked). The shelter is located off the Twin Creeks Road overlooking a muskeg.
