About

Twin Creek Shelter is a three-sided Adirondack-style shelter situated approximately 3 miles up Twin Creek Road from Mitkof Highway, south of Petersburg on Mitkof Island. The shelter is designed primarily for winter use and features a wood stove and benches, providing a warming station for winter recreationists. Surrounded by spruce and hemlock trees, the shelter offers views of the muskeg meadows below and serves as the trailhead for several popular winter routes including the Twin-Frenchy Snowmobile Trail, Twin Ridge Ski Trail, and Upper Twin Ski Trail. The surrounding terrain consists of open, rolling muskeg hills and spruce/hemlock forest, providing excellent opportunities for snowmobiling, skiing, and snowboarding in winter months. The shelter is also a pleasant destination during summer and autumn. Water is available from muskeg pools or nearby streams, though all water must be treated before use. The Frenchy Ridge Shelter is located 4 miles south via the Upper Twin Ski and Snowmobile Trail. Twin Creek Road is not maintained during winter, requiring snowmobile or four-wheel-drive vehicle access during that season.
