Happy Hill Shelter
Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations required. Water must be treated from nearby sources.
About
Happy Hill Shelter is a distinctive stone and log structure situated on the Appalachian Trail in the Green Mountain National Forest near Norwich, Vermont. Unlike typical wooden lean-tos, this shelter features stone construction with a sleeping loft, giving hikers the option to sleep on the ground floor or in the elevated loft area. The shelter can accommodate approximately 6-10 people between both levels. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees or reservations required. A privy is located nearby, and level tent camping sites surround the shelter for overflow or those preferring to tent. Water is available from nearby sources but must be filtered or treated before drinking. This is a hike-in only backcountry site with no vehicle access, typically reached via the Appalachian Trail from Elm Street or Tigertown Road trailheads.
Directions
Access via the Appalachian Trail. One approach is from the Cossingham Trail off Bragg Hill Road in Norwich, approximately 2 miles along the AT to the shelter turnoff.
