About
Templar State Recreation Area sits on the west shore of Big Spirit Lake, Iowa's largest natural lake, approximately two miles north of Spirit Lake. The park is primarily known for its boat ramp, which launches into a protected lagoon that allows boaters to launch safely even on windy days. Spirit Lake offers excellent fishing for walleye, northern pike, muskellunge, largemouth and smallmouth bass, white bass, perch, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and bullheads. The park provides shore fishing access along the lakeshore for those without boats. This is a day-use recreation area only with no overnight camping facilities. The park has one picnic shelter available for reservations and two gazebos on a first-come-first-served basis. Templar is operated as a satellite of Gull Point State Park.
