About
Taku Glacier Cabin offers a backcountry experience on the east shore of Taku Inlet, 26 miles northeast of Juneau. This 14x16-foot Pan Abode-style cabin sits on a saltwater beach surrounded by marsh estuary and old-growth spruce, with a backdrop of forested bedrock hillsides, steep canyons, and cliffs. Views include nearby snow-capped peaks and both Taku and Norris Glaciers. The cabin sleeps six with two single and two double bunks, and includes a table, benches, oil heater, cooking counter, food cupboard, and a picnic table on the 12x20-foot front deck. A wheelchair-accessible boardwalk connects the beach, cabin, and outhouse. Water is available from a nearby stream but must be treated before use. Access is by float plane or motorboat only. Boats require a 12-foot or higher tide for shallow-draft approach, and wheelchair ramp access requires a 16-foot tide. The area supports grizzly and black bears, moose, mountain goats, and nesting eagles. Activities include salmon fishing, berry picking, and hunting in season. No developed trails exist, but hiking is possible for those comfortable with unmarked terrain.
