About

Taku Harbor State Marine Park encompasses 700 acres of undeveloped wilderness on the eastern shore of Stephens Passage, roughly 22 miles southeast of Juneau. The park has no road access and requires arrival by boat, kayak, or floatplane. The natural bowl-shaped harbor once hosted a major salmon cannery and now serves as a popular overnight anchorage for commercial fishing vessels, tour boats, and recreational boaters from Juneau. The primary accommodation is the Tiger Olson Cabin, a rustic public use cabin that sleeps up to six guests and includes beds, bunkbeds, a broom and dustpan, and fire extinguisher. Tent camping is permitted on the beach or in forested areas, though designated campsites do not exist. Facilities are minimal: pit toilets are available but no potable water is provided. Visitors must treat surface water or bring their own supply. Recreational opportunities abound including fishing, crabbing, kayaking, hiking, hunting, berry picking, wildlife viewing, and beachcombing. Campfires are permitted only in authorized structures or on sand/gravel bars. The harbor is known for possible bear encounters, so visitors should make noise while hiking. Dogs are allowed but must be controlled at all times.

Directions

No road access. The park is located on the eastern shore of Stephens Passage, approximately 22 miles southeast of Juneau. Access is by boat, kayak, or floatplane only. Floatplanes can land on the water and dock at the harbor in suitable weather.
