About
Taku Harbor State Marine Park encompasses 700 acres of undeveloped wilderness on the eastern shore of Stephens Passage, approximately 22 miles southeast of Juneau. This natural, bowl-shaped harbor has a rich history as the former site of a major salmon cannery and continues to serve as a popular night anchorage for commercial fishing boats and small tour ships. The park is accessible only by boat or floatplane, making it a remote destination for experienced recreationists. The Tiger Olson public use cabin accommodates up to six people and can be reserved through Alaska State Parks. The harbor and surrounding waters offer excellent fishing and crabbing opportunities, while the marine environment supports diverse wildlife viewing. Boaters and kayakers frequent this destination for its protected anchorage and scenic beauty. As an undeveloped marine park, visitors should be prepared for primitive conditions and bring all necessary supplies. Surface water must be treated before drinking, and visitors should be prepared for bear encounters, wet weather, and the challenges of remote wilderness camping. The park is a favored stop for those exploring Southeast Alaska's Inside Passage by boat.
