About
Tail Race Campground is a minimally developed Bureau of Land Management camping area located just south of Fontenelle Reservoir along the east side of the Green River in southwestern Wyoming. The campground features three campsites, each equipped with a fire ring, and one vault toilet serving the area. This small, primitive campground occupies a unique position wedged between Fontenelle Reservoir to the north and Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge to the south, making it an ideal base camp for outdoor enthusiasts interested in birding, fishing, and non-motorized water sports.
The location's natural setting provides direct access to the Green River and its rich recreational opportunities, including stream fishing and small craft boating. The proximity to Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge makes this campground particularly attractive to birders and wildlife watchers. Historically, this area served as a gathering place for trappers during their annual rendezvous, and visitors can still appreciate the appeal this resource-rich area held for early explorers and mountain men. The campground is managed jointly through an interagency agreement between the BLM Kemmerer Field Office and the Bureau of Reclamation Provo Area Office.
Directions
Located 1/4 mile south of Fontenelle Reservoir on the east side of the Green River. To access the campground, travel east on Highway 372 for one mile, cross the Green River Bridge, then immediately turn north for four miles. Turn west before the dam to the river and go one mile further.
