Sunrise Shelter

Open — Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations available. A new shelter was built in 2023.

About

Sunrise Shelter is a primitive backcountry lean-to located on Vermont's iconic Long Trail in Green Mountain National Forest, south of Brandon Gap. Originally built in 1964 as a gift from a former Vermont governor, the shelter was replaced with a new structure in 2023, featuring timber-framed construction designed to last over 100 years. The shelter is maintained by the Green Mountain Club and provides a dry refuge for Long Trail hikers traveling the main ridge of the Green Mountains. As with all Long Trail shelters, Sunrise operates on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved. During peak hiking season, shelters typically fill up, so hikers should always carry a tent. Water is available from nearby natural sources and must be treated or filtered before drinking. The shelter provides basic protection from the elements but no amenities. No fees are required to stay overnight. The shelter is accessible via the Long Trail, approximately 10 kilometers north of David Logan Shelter and south of Brandon Gap. The area offers opportunities for backcountry hiking and camping in one of Vermont's most scenic national forest areas.
