About

Sucker Brook Shelter is a rustic three-sided lean-to located in the Joseph Battell Wilderness on federal land within the Green Mountain National Forest. The shelter serves as an overnight stop for hikers on both the Long Trail and North Country Trail. Access is via the Sucker Brook Trail, which ascends 1.2 miles on an old logging road before reaching the shelter just below its junction with the Long Trail. The site offers minimal but functional amenities typical of Long Trail shelters: a composting privy and access to a primitive water source that must be filtered or treated before consumption. Water sources may fail during dry periods. There is no potable water, and campers must pack out all trash following Leave No Trace principles. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a maximum stay of two consecutive nights requested. No horses, mountain bikes, or motorized vehicles are permitted on the trail. During peak hiking season, shelters often fill quickly, so carrying a tent or tarp as backup is recommended.
