Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 2:33AM EDT by NWS Burlington VT

2:33 AM — 12:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures today in the upper 60s to lower 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures. Lake and river temperatures are only in the upper 40s to mid 50s. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the US Coast Guard, when the water temperatures are below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could lose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating today and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!

About

Skyline Lodge sits at the edge of Skylight Pond in the heart of the Breadloaf Wilderness, one of the more distinctive backcountry overnight sites on Vermont's Long Trail. Built in 1987 by the Green Mountain Club, this four-walled structure has a large front door, two paneled windows overlooking a front porch, and two sleeping decks inside that can accommodate a group comfortably. The approach follows the Skyline Trail 2.6 miles from the trailhead on Forest Road 59. The trail ascends on an old woods road, crosses two small streams, enters the Breadloaf Wilderness, then climbs more steeply via long switchbacks before crossing the Long Trail and arriving at the pond and lodge. Trail blazing and maintenance are minimal in the wilderness area. All overnight sites on the Long Trail include a privy and water source. Water must be treated or filtered before drinking. There is no fee to stay, and sites operate first-come, first-served with a two-night limit. A GMC caretaker may be in residence during peak season. Campers must practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out all trash.
