Boyce Shelter
Open year-round, first-come, first-served with no reservations or fees. Maximum stay is 2 consecutive nights. Winter access depends on snow conditions and road accessibility to Burnt Hill Trailhead.
About
Boyce Shelter is a classic three-sided backcountry lean-to on Vermont's Long Trail, nestled within the 24,986-acre Breadloaf Wilderness. The shelter provides a primitive overnight option for thru-hikers and backpackers exploring this federally designated wilderness area. Access is via the Burnt Hill Trail, which climbs steadily along an old logging road before entering the wilderness and ascending more steeply to the Long Trail junction at 2.1 miles. From there, Boyce Shelter lies 0.6 miles north. Facilities are minimal but functional: a composting toilet serves the site, and water can be obtained from nearby streams (treatment required due to giardia and other pathogens). There is no potable water, and campers must pack out all trash in accordance with Leave No Trace principles. The shelter operates first-come, first-served with no reservations and no fees. As a wilderness area shelter, trail blazing, maintenance, and signage are intentionally minimal. Maximum stay is limited to two consecutive nights. The trailhead parking is located on private property off Forest Road 59; hikers should be respectful of the landowners.
Directions
From Middlebury, travel south on Route 7 to Route 125. Head east on Route 125 for 6.6 miles and turn left onto Forest Road 59. Hike the Burnt Hill Trail 2.1 miles to the Long Trail junction, then 0.6 miles north on the Long Trail to the shelter.
