Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 12:35PM EDT by NWS Burlington VT

12:35 PM — 10:00 PM

...Please check with state and local authorities regarding guidelines for allowed activities... * The warm air temperatures today in the upper 60s to lower 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the 40s and 50s across Lake Champlain and in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the US Coast Guard, when the water temperatures are below 50 degrees, the chance of immediate incapacitation due to cold shock is extremely high. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!

About

Silver Lake Campground sits on the shores of Silver Lake, a beautiful 100-acre lake completely surrounded by the Green Mountain National Forest within the Moosalamoo National Recreation Area. This primitive campground requires all visitors to hike or bike in with their gear, creating a more secluded camping experience away from vehicle traffic. The campground features 15 irregularly spaced sites along a wooded road, with seven sites available for advance reservation through Recreation.gov and eight sites first-come, first-served. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and bear-proof food storage locker. Two vault toilets serve the campground, with an additional barrier-free vault toilet at the nearby picnic area. From the campground, visitors can access swimming and fishing on Silver Lake, as well as several hiking and mountain biking trails including the Leicester Hollow/Chandler Ridge loop. The Rattlesnake Cliff/Aunt Jenny hiking loop is closed March 15 through August 1 for Peregrine Falcon nesting. The Moosalamoo area offers over 70 miles of trails, mountain vistas, waterfalls, and streams.
