Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 12:35PM EDT by NWS Burlington VT

12:35 PM — 10:00 PM

...Please check with state and local authorities regarding guidelines for allowed activities... * The warm air temperatures today in the upper 60s to lower 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the 40s and 50s across Lake Champlain and in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the US Coast Guard, when the water temperatures are below 50 degrees, the chance of immediate incapacitation due to cold shock is extremely high. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!

About

Chittenden Brook Campground is nestled in a beautiful northern hardwoods forest within the Green Mountain National Forest, approximately seven miles from Rochester, Vermont. This small, semi-remote campground offers 17 irregularly spaced sites along a wooded loop, each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring with grill, parking spur for two vehicles, and a gravel tent pad. Two barrier-free vault toilets serve the campground, but no potable water is available. The campground serves as a gateway to extensive recreation opportunities. A 7.5-mile trail network designed for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing begins at the campground and connects to the Long Trail National Recreation Trail. The Chittenden Brook area offers mountain vistas, waterfalls, pristine streams, and opportunities for mountain biking, swimming, river tubing, and fishing. Wildlife in the area includes white-tailed deer, moose, and black bear. The campground is best suited for tent camping due to the narrow access road. Sites are available through Recreation.gov, with some first-come, first-served availability. Quiet hours are 10 PM to 6 AM, with a maximum 14-day stay within any 30-day period.
