Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 2:28AM EDT by NWS Gray ME
* Air temperatures in the lower 60s to lower 70s this weekend (50s on Sunday) may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Generally light and variable winds shift to southerly today. Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.
About
Mount Sunapee State Park campground provides a backcountry-style camping experience in New Hampshire's Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Region. The 11 sites are split between five lean-to shelters and six tent platforms, all nestled in a wooded setting on the mountain. This is a primitive campground with pit toilets and water spigots but no electricity or hookups. Most sites require a short walk from parking, making it unsuitable for RVs or trailers. The campground sits about two miles from the 4,085-acre Lake Sunapee, where the state beach offers swimming, boating, and picnicking. Hiking trails extend from the campground area, and the adjacent Mount Sunapee Resort provides winter skiing. Check-in occurs at Mount Sunapee State Beach before 6 pm; late arrivals may set up and check in the following morning. Cell service is limited to nonexistent depending on provider. Firewood must be purchased on-site due to restrictions on outside firewood to prevent exotic insects and tree diseases. Pets are permitted at the campground but prohibited at the beach.
Directions
From the traffic circle on Route 103, exit toward Mount Sunapee Resort. Take the first left (marked with a small blue tent sign) into a large gravel parking lot. Turn right and follow Park Road uphill for one mile; the campground will be on your left.
