Closed

Closed for the season. Due to its high elevation at 10,300 feet, Summit Lake Campground typically does not open until mid-July and remains open until snow makes it unreachable, usually in fall.

About

Summit Lake Campground is a high-elevation destination on Buffalo Pass, located at 10,300 feet in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest outside Steamboat Springs. The campground provides 9 back-in campsites suitable for RVs and trailers, plus 6 walk-in tent sites. Every site has a picnic table and fire grate. Two vault toilets and trash service are available, though there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Payment is cash or check only with exact change required. Two day-use parking areas provide access to Summit Lake for fishing and picnicking. Only hand-powered watercraft are permitted on the lake. The area is popular for mountain biking, dirt biking, ATVing, horseback riding, and hiking. The campground sits near the boundary of Mount Zirkel Wilderness, offering extensive backcountry opportunities for more adventurous visitors.

Directions

From Steamboat Springs, travel 2 miles north on Routt County Road 36 (Strawberry Park Road), then 13 miles northeast on Routt County Road 38 (Buffalo Pass Road). The campground is at the summit.
