Dumont Campground

Closed — Closed for the season due to winter snow conditions. Typically operates during summer months. Subject to late opening in spring depending on snowpack and road access.

About

Dumont Campground is a high-elevation facility perched at 9,400 feet atop the Park Range in the Routt National Forest, 22 miles southeast of Steamboat Springs. The campground features 21 private, roomy campsites with clear views of lush alpine meadows and surrounding mountain ranges. The facility borders the Continental Divide and provides convenient access to the 50-acre Dumont Lake, which sits in a spruce-fir forest near the base of Rabbit Ears Peak. The lake offers excellent spin and fly fishing for trout and is restricted to electric motors or hand-propelled boats. Birding opportunities are exceptional, and wildlife including black bear, elk, mule deer, moose, bobcat, and coyote inhabit the area. Hikers can access the two-mile Rabbit Ears Trail directly from the facility and reach the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail nearby. The area also provides opportunities for backpacking, mountain biking on dirt roads and trails, and rock climbing. Campsites are basic but well-equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. Three vault toilets serve the campground, and potable water is available. A separate day-use area provides additional picnic facilities near the lake. Due to the high elevation and heavy snow conditions common in the area, the campground is subject to seasonal closures and may experience late opening dates in spring.

Directions

From Steamboat Springs, travel 22 miles southeast on U.S. Highway 40/Rabbit Ears Pass. Turn left on Forest Road 315 at the Dumont Campground sign. The campground is located about a mile from the highway.
