About
Located in the Mayacamas Mountains northeast of Kenwood, Sugarloaf Ridge State Park day use area sits at the headwaters of Sonoma Creek in a landscape ranging from 600 feet at the entrance to 2,729 feet atop Bald Mountain. The park encompasses 3,900 acres of oak woodland and chaparral with 25 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and biking. A self-guided nature trail along Sonoma Creek leads through gorges and canyons past scenic rock outcroppings, with a 25-foot waterfall that flows after winter rains. Wildlife including deer, bobcats, gray foxes, and coyotes inhabit the park, and spring wildflowers create colorful displays across the hills. On clear days, the summit of Bald Mountain offers panoramic views stretching to the Sierra Nevada and Golden Gate Bridge. The park also houses the Robert Ferguson Observatory, operated by the Valley of the Moon Observatory Association, which provides year-round astronomy education programs. Managed by the nonprofit Sonoma Ecology Center and Team Sugarloaf, the park is located about one hour from San Francisco and seven miles east of Santa Rosa. Day use hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
