Samuel P. Taylor Sp Cabins
Closed — The campgrounds including cabins are temporarily closed due to high winds and potential tree hazards from recent rainfall. The park expects these conditions to continue throughout the week. Day use remains open but visitors should exercise caution. Campsite reservations are being cancelled and refunded with the option to reschedule.
About
Samuel P. Taylor State Park's Madrone Cabins offer a comfortable camping alternative in one of Marin County's most scenic locations. Set among towering redwoods, bay laurels, oaks, and madrone trees along Lagunitas Creek, the cabins provide year-round access to nearly 2,900 acres of diverse landscapes ranging from shady canyon groves to oak-studded grasslands and the rolling hills of Barnabe Peak. The cabins are located within the Madrone Group Camp area, separate from the main Camp Taylor campground loops. These recently installed structures provide convenient access to the park's extensive trail network, including routes to Barnabe Peak offering panoramic views of Marin County, and the popular partially paved Cross Marin Trail favored by cyclists and families. The park's historic Camp Taylor dates back to the 1800s and is considered the site of one of the world's first recreational campgrounds. While the cabins offer a more sheltered camping experience, visitors still have access to park amenities including restrooms with showers and drinking water. The park is an excellent base for exploring Point Reyes National Seashore and observing seasonal wildlife, though creek access is restricted December through mid-June to protect federally threatened coho salmon and steelhead during spawning season. Reservations are required during spring and summer, while fall and winter operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
