Samuel P. Taylor Devil Gulch Group Campground

Closed — Temporarily closed as of December 27, 2025 due to high winds and potential hazards from treefall and landslides. Campsite reservations during the closure period are being cancelled and refunded with the option to reschedule. The park remains open for day use. Creek access at Samuel P. Taylor is closed December 1 through June 15 annually for salmon spawning season.

Devil Gulch Group Campground sits in the primitive western section of Samuel P. Taylor State Park, about a mile beyond the main Camp Taylor entrance along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. This quiet camping area comprises two small group sites plus one dedicated equestrian group campsite positioned above Devil's Gulch Creek in a canyon setting. The equestrian group site can accommodate up to 20 people, 6 vehicles, and 12 horses, featuring 8 pipe corrals, 3 wire-and-post corrals, hitching racks, and water troughs. Campers bringing horses are responsible for cleaning up and removing manure. The location provides access to fire roads and trails suitable for horseback riding, including routes through shaded redwood groves and oak-studded grasslands. This primitive camping area offers a more secluded experience compared to the developed Camp Taylor campgrounds. The Devil's Gulch trailhead across the road provides access to a 5-mile hike through varied habitats including shaded creek corridors lined with big-leaf maples. The park's 2,882 acres feature landscapes ranging from redwood canyon groves along Lagunitas Creek to the rolling hills of Barnabe Peak. Reservations are available up to six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia.

Directions

Located in Samuel P. Taylor State Park, 15 miles west of San Rafael on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Continue 1 mile west past the Camp Taylor entrance. Park in the large pullout area on the left side of the road opposite the Devil's Gulch trailhead and walk across the street to access the campground.
